OceanHero
OceanHero is a search engine that is devoted to collecting plastics, mostly bottle waste in the oceans.[1] It has been certified by the United Nations (UN) Head of Marine and Freshwater Branch.[1]
OceanHero follows the model of a similar search engine, Ecosia, which finances tree planting. It earns it's revenue like most other search engines by displaying ads on search results. It then uses the revenue generated from ads to finance collecting plastic bottles from oceans located in Southeast Asia.[2] It can also be installed as an extension.[3]
To use OceanHero, just type in the search box. You'll earn 20 shells from each search. For opening a tab, you can earn 10 shells. Also, different colored shells will occasionally pop up on the search engine, asking questions. Answer them correct, and you get a lot of shells. Answer them wrong, you'll still get shells, but less. Earn 100 shells and you get a bottle. Don't worry if you log off your computer, though. There's a bottle counter that counts the number of bottles you have collected. Also, you can turn on Ocean mode to to search in style.
OceanHero can be found as an extension in app store.
Using OceanHero gives financial support to collect plastic from the oceans.[4][5]
Many people who work for OceanHero are low income people who are paid the revenue from ads on OceanHero's search results. They are paid to remove plastics from their local seas.[6]
