Etymology

The i vowel of past-tense -is plus the t of the Latin/Romance/German passive perfect participle.

Suffix

-it-

  1. (nominal) -ito One who has undergone the action of the root
    Example: ‎ami (“to love”) + ‎-ito → ‎amito (“one that has been loved”)
  2. (adjectival) -ita The passive past participle
    Example: ‎ami (“to love”) + ‎-ita → ‎amita (“having been loved”)
