Potentially attested as bodengrauen in 1064, attested with certainty as bodengrave in 1351-1356. Derived from a hydronym, derived in turn from a compound of Old Dutch Bodo (“a personal name”), bodo (“messenger”) or an older hydronym cognate to Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌿𐌸𐍃 (bauþs, “mute, deaf”) and grave (“excavated or canalised watercourse”).
