First attested as exsell in 1356. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps a compound of Middle Dutch eike (“oak, Quercus”) and lo (“light forest”). Another possibility is a compound of either Middle Dutch eike (“oak, Quercus”) or a personal name and sele (“hall house”). Compare Hexel and Hooge Hexel.
