Borrowed from Latin Gabae, from Ancient Greek Γάβαι (Gábai), probably from Old Persian *Gaba-. Possibly corresponds to Middle Persian 𐭢𐭣𐭩‎ (gdy /Gay/, “Sasanian Isfahan”), Parthian 𐭂𐭀𐭁‎ (gʾb, “Sasanian Isfahan”), Arabic جَيْ‎ (jay, “[capital of] Isfahan?”).
