Etymology

Inherited from Old Swedish Hawærydh. Originally compound of have (“pasture”) +‎ ryd (“clearing”).[1]

Transformed via the parish dialect to "Haverd" + -a (“plural”), which led to the folk etymological ending dal (“valley”).[1] For unkown reason many Swedish place-names are in plural form, despite referring to a single feature.[2]

The dal (“valley”) form is attested since 1603 as Haffredall. Original form first attested in 1466.[1]
