Kampf

German

Etymology

From Middle High German kampf, from Old High German kampf, from Proto-West Germanic *kamp (battlefield, battle), borrowed from Latin campus.

The word originally referred to the “field”, but early on developed the sense “fight” in High German. This is a denotation of the event by the location where it takes place. Cognate to Old English camp and Swedish kamp.
