Mentioned in Ancient Greek sources as Τίγισις (Tígisis), possibly from Numidian, and cognate with Tamazight ⵜⵉⵊ (tin), meaning assembly, settlement, place + ⵉⵖⵉⵕ (iɣir), meaning shoulder, slope, mountaintop. Thus "hilly place".
