Two possible etymologies:

  1. Demiraj derives it from Proto-Albanian *auK-(ul-), from Proto-Indo-European *Houk- (cold, frost). Cognate to Armenian ոյծ (oyc, cold, frost).[1]
  2. Orel considers it to be a loanword from East Germanic, from Proto-Germanic *jekulaz[2].
