From Proto-Turkic *bat-gak (“swamp, marsh”). Cognate with Chuvash путлăх (putlăh), путлăх (putlăh), etc. Alternatively, a derivation of Proto-Turkic *bat- (“to sink; to fit into, get into”), whence also Azerbaijani batmaq.
