From Arabic ذُنُوب‎ (ḏunūb), plural of ذَنْب‎ (ḏanb, “sin, sinful or blameworthy act, blame, moral guilt”). The Arabic plural was reanalysed as a singular, perhaps due to the notion, chiefly (though not exclusively) Christian, of sin as a continuing state, rather than only a repeatable act. For this “state of sin”, Arabic uses خَطِيئة‎ (ḵaṭīʔa) or less often مَعْصِية‎ (maʕṣiya).
