Etymology
Either a substratum word, or Vulgar Latin *puerunculus (probably reduced to *pueruncus), a diminutive from Classical Latin puer. Alternatively from Proto-Slavic *prǫtьče (“small rod”) (compare Bulgarian пръчка (prǎčka), Serbo-Croatian prùtić), diminutive of Proto-Slavic *prǫtъ (“rod, withe, switch”) (compare Serbo-Croatian prȗt, Bulgarian прът (prǎt)). In this case the original form in Romanian would have been prunci, later interpreted as a plural from which a singular was analogically formed.
