From Arabic رَقَدَ‎ (raqada, “to lie down, go to bed, sleep”). The normal Arabic word for “to sleep”, نَامَ‎ (nāma), is entirely absent in contemporary Maltese, but compare obsolete newm (“drowsiness after a meal”).
