From Middle High German vertuon, from Old High German fartuon (“to fordo, waste, destroy”), from Proto-Germanic *fardōną, *fradōną (“to ruin, destroy”). Equivalent to ver- +‎ tun. Cognate with English fordo, Dutch verdoen.
