140th IOC Session

The 140th IOC Session is an upcoming IOC Session to be held in Mumbai, India in 2023.[1][2]

Bidders

Mumbai stood as the only bidder to host the session. The IOC membership approved Mumbai's application during the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. This will mark the second time an IOC Session is held in India. The 86th IOC Session in 1983 was held in New Delhi.[3] Due to several problems related to Indian Olympic Association, the session was delayed to either September or October 2023.

Agenda

Several items are expected to be on the agenda during the three day IOC Session. The host city for the 2030 Winter Olympics was initially going to be selected as this session, but the IOC has pushed back the date on that decision.[4] The host city for the 2036 Summer Olympics will be selected during this session.

Confirmed bids for 2036 Summer Olympics

Carlos Padilla, president of the Mexican Olympic Committee believes that Guadalajara is one of the four Mexican cities (next to Mexico City, Tijuana and Monterrey) that could attempt to host some Olympic games after 2026. In an interview with the ESPN chain the director said that those four cities "have everything" to seek to be headquarters, but not immediately.[5] Guadalajara hosted the 2011 Pan American Games and bid for the 2022 Gay Games, losing to Hong Kong. Marcelo Ebrard, the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, stated on social media that if a bid is authorised by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the country will seek to host the 2036 or 2040 Olympic Games. Mexico last hosted the Summer Olympics in 1968 in Mexico City.[6] On October 26th, 2022 Foreign Affairs Secretary of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, alongside the President of the Mexican Olympic Committee, announced that Mexico would be officially bidding to host the games in 2036. On March 25, 2023, the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard and the President of the Mexican Olympic Committee, María José Alcalá, handed over an official letter of intent to IOC President Thomas Bach.[7]

Indonesia previously hosted the 2018 Asian Games and was also interested in hosting the 2032 Summer Olympics, before losing out to Brisbane, Australia.[9] On 3 August 2022, President Joko Widodo plans to hold the 2036 Olympics in Nusantara, the new capital city of Indonesia.[10] Widodo later reaffirmed his country's efforts in November of the same year. On 16 November 2022, Indonesian President Joko Widodo confirmed that they would bid with the new capital Nusantara, which is under construction.[11]

On 8 June 2020, the Vice-President of the Turkish Olympic Committee (TNOC) Hazan Arat said "Istanbul should be a candidate city for the 2032 Summer Olympic Games."
