Background
In 2019, protests took place cross Chile, with protestors demanding a verity of reforms.[3] In response to the unrest, Chile's National Congress agreed to hold a national referendum that would rewrite the constitution if approved. The referendum was approved by an overwhelming majority, paving the way for a new constitution to be drafted by the Constitutional Convention, which had a left-wing majority after it was elected by the 2021 Chilean Constitutional Convention election.
The national plebiscite for a proposed new constitution was held on 4 September 2022.[4] Voters rejected the proposed constitution during the plebiscite, with it being viewed as too "left-leaning" and "radical".[5]
In December 2022, after the proposed new constitution was rejected, Chilean lawmakers agreed to start a new process to draft a new constitution to replace the Pinochet era constitution. The new constitution will be drafted by 24 experts and 50 constitutional advisors elected by direct vote.[6]
Constitutional Council
The constitutional council will finalize the constitution framework drafted by 24 experts. The council was elected by direct vote during the 2023 Chilean Constitutional Council election, which resulted in a right-wing supermajority led by the Republican Party.[7]
