How it Started
In 1924, Don Carlos Edwards set up a tiny little refreshment stand at a Pioneer Day celebration. Little did he know that by 1941, it would grow into a thriving BBQ restaurant—but Don knew it was destined for something even bigger. Nine years later, Arctic Circle was formed.[6]
Don Carlos Edwards opened the first Arctic Circle restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1950. Shortly after opening Arctic Circle, Edwards introduced what was initially called "pink sauce." It soon became known as Utah's famous "fry sauce" even though it was virtually unknown outside the state until visitors to the 2002 Olympics began spreading the word. Similar to a smooth Thousand Island dressing, it has been described as a combination of mayonnaise and ketchup.[7]
