BNS Sheikh Hasina

BNS Sheikh Hasina is a new naval base that has been developed for the Bangladesh Navy. This is the first ever full-fledged submarine base of Bangladesh Navy. Built at a cost of $1.21 billion, the base can accommodate a total of six submarines and eight warships at a time. It will allow for safe and swift movement of the submarines in case of emergency, as the base is located at the Bay of Bengal.This project is one of the biggest projects of the Bangladesh government. Bangladesh had no previous experience in implementing such projects. Therefore, in 2019 the Construction of the project has been given to China. China completed the project in 2023 as per the earlier schedule and on 20th March of the same year, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh commissioned the project and handed it over to the Bangladesh Navy. The Submarine Base has been fully flagged by Bangladesh, named after the Prime minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, "BNS Sheikh Hasina".[1] [2][3]

History

On 3 March 2017 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of a submarine base in Pekua in the coastal city of Cox's Bazar.[4]

Facilities

BNS Sheikh Hasina is The largest submarines base in South Asia with all modern facilities In addition to submarines, this base also has a full-fledged naval dock where eight ships of the Navy can be kept at anchor at all times, and other ships can be used for maintenance, repair and procurement of logistics and Armaments. This base will provide the security of the Bay of Bengal as well as the security of the Indian Ocean. All commercial and military ships from all over the world can anchor at this base in case of any problems and make repairs as needed
