Big Three (Turkey)

The Big Three (Turkish: "Üç Büyükler") is the colloquial name given to Beşiktaş J.K., Fenerbahçe S.K. and Galatasaray S.K., the three most successful sports clubs in Turkey. They all are based in Istanbul.

Galatasaray is Turkey's most champion team with 22 championships. Fenerbahçe won 19 championships (The club claims to have won 28 championships[1]), Beşiktaş won 16 Turkish championships (14 Süper Lig + 2 Turkish Federation Cup). None of the trio have been relegated since 1959. Here are the worst places they have finished in league history: Fenerbahce is 10th (1980–81), Beşiktaş is 11th (1975–76) and Galatasaray is 13th (2021–22).[2]

While Galatasaray is superior in the number of trophies, Fenerbahçe is more successful in derbies played between 3 teams. Galatasaray is the only team in the country to win trophies from Europe.[3][4]

90% of the fans in Turkey support the Big Three. A survey by a fan-token platform showed overwhelming support for Galatasaray in 60 out of 81 provinces of Turkey. Its crosstown rival Fenerbahçe had the highest number of fans in 17 provinces, while Beşiktaş, the other member of Turkish football's "Big Three", had more fans than other clubs only in the eastern province of Iğdır. According to the survey, 37.6% of the fans support Galatasaray, 32.3% support Fenerbahçe and 20.8% support Beşiktaş.[5][6]
