Federal Polytechnic, Offa


The Federal Polytechnic, Offa is a Nigerian tertiary institution located in Offa, Kwara State.[1] Established in 1992[2] during the administration of Ibrahim Babangida, a presidential pronouncement of its establishment was made at the Palace of His Royal Highness, Olofa of Offa, late Oba Mustapha Olawoore Olanipekun Ariwajoye II, by the then Military President, Ibrahim Babangida during a state visit in 1991.[3] The Polytechnic came out of gestation via a presidential announcement made during a courtesy call on His Royal Highness, Olofa of Offa, late Oba Mustapha Olawoore Olanipekun Ariwajoye II, by the then Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, who was on an official visit to Kwara State in 1991 [4].The polytechnic offers National Diploma and Higher National Diploma courses at undergraduate levels.[5] Consequently, a Local Task Force was then constituted by His Royal Highness, the Olofa, under the Chairman Alhaji Tiamiyu Olatinwo with six other eminent indigenes of Offa and Chief Ayotunde Raji as Secretary.[6] The Federal Polytechnic, Offa Mini Campus is located at the southern end of the town along Offa-Osogbo Way, while the Main Campus is located along Offa-Ojoku Road, Offa.[7]

The pioneer Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr. (Mrs.) Taiwo Adeife Osemeikhian, administered the Polytechnic from February 1992 to the year 2000, under the supervision of a Federal Task Force led by the Director of Science and Technology, Federal Ministry of Education. The Task Force was responsible for taking major policy decisions affecting the Polytechnic and performing the functions of the Governing Council. She handed over to Dr. Razaq Bello who was Rector between 2000 and 2006. Dr. Mufutau Olatinwo, took over the affairs of the Polytechnic in 2006 as Ag. Rector and later as the third substantive Rector since 2008.[8] The first batches of three hundred and sixty (360) students were admitted into

I. Financial Studies

II. Business Studies

III. Secretarial Studies

IV. Science Laboratory Technology

V. Electrical/Electronic Engineering

VI. Computer Science.

The Polytechnic was recently ranked 8th position in the latest pilot ranking

and assessment of 112 Federal, State and Private polytechnics in Nigeria by the

National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).[9]

During the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria, the polytechnic invented "solar-powered anti-COVID-19 machines.[10] The first Governing Council of the Polytechnic was put in place in the year 2000, the second in 2005 the third in 2009 while the fourth and current council under the chairmanship of Chief Okey Ezenwa was inaugurated in April 2013.[11]

Awards and recognition

The Former Rector, Federal Polytechnic Offa, Dr. Mufutau Olatinwo, was among the illustrious sons of Offa community recently honoured at the Outstanding Gold Leaders Award organised by the home branch of the 65-year-old Offa Descendants Union (ODU).[12]

The Federal Polytechnic Library Offa, was established in 1992 and named after late William Adedoyin the first offa descendant Union National President. The building was constructed by the late Oyeleke family, and presented to the polytechnic at the mini campus.[13]

The Federal Polytechnic Offa offers mainly National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in the following academic programs on full time and part time basis;

  • HND: Library and Information Science; Office Technology and Management, and Mass Communication

School of Applied Science and Technology

  • ND: Computer Science, Food Technology, Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), and Statistics.
  • HND: Computer Science, Food Technology, Statistics, Science Laboratory Technology with option in i. Biochemistry, ii. Microbiology, iii. Physics with Electronics

School of Business and Management Studies

  • ND: Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, and Insurance
  • HND: Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Insurance, and Marketing

School of Engineering Technology

  • ND: Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineerin
  • HND: Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering (with options in I. Electronics and Telecommunication ii. Power and Machine), and Mechanical Engineering (with options in I. Power and Plant ii. Manufacturing)

School of Environmental Studies

  • ND: Architecture, Building Technology, Estate Management and Valuation, Geo-informatics, Urban and Regional Planning, and Quantity Surveying
