History

Josh Harris (pictured) co-founded the company with David Blitzer in 2017

American private equity investors Josh Harris and David Blitzer led investment groups that bought the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association in 2011 and the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League in 2013. To consolidate their shared ventures, the two founded a holding company, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE), on September 25, 2017.[1] In 2018, HBSE partnered with the San Francisco 49ers and Creative Artists Agency to establish Elevate Sports Venture, a consulting firm specializing on event marketing and ticketing.[2] In 2019, the company invested in an esports entertainment company, New Meta Entertainment, after merging the esport organizations Dignitas and Clutch Gaming.[3][4]

In 2020, HBSE hired a Chief Diversity and Impact Officer and pledged $20 million to fight racial injustice.[5][6] The same year, HBSE donated millions of dollars to local communities in Philadelphia and Newark in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.[7][8] Tad Brown, former executive of the Houston Rockets and Toyota Center, was hired as CEO in August 2021.[9] In 2022, Fanatics, Inc. CEO Michael G. Rubin sold a 10% equity stake in HBSE to David J. Adelman to avoid a conflict of interest regarding Fanatics' growing sports betting business and player partnerships.[10][11]
