JioCinema

JioCinema is an Indian subscription video on-demand over-the-top streaming service owned by Viacom 18 subsidiary of TV18. Launched on 5 September 2016, JioCinema's content library includes films, television shows, web series, music videos, documentaries, and sports. After the completion of a merger between JioCinema and Viacom18 in September 2022, Viacom18 shifted all its sporting content from Voot to JioCinema, making latter the digital sporting destination of the network. The mobile app is available for Android and iOS devices.

History

JioCinema was launched on 5 September along with the public launch of Jio in 2016. JioCinema is one of the apps provided exclusively for Jio users along with other apps (JioTV, JioSaavn, JioNews, JioMart, JioMeet, JioChat,and JioTalks), owned by Jio Platforms.

JioCinema was earlier available only on Google Play Store[1] and iOS App Store,[2] however, also launched a web version[3][4] a year after the official launch and after that on JioPhone[5] and TV.

In September 2022, CCI approved the merger of JioCinema into Viacom18.[6]

In 2022, JioCinema was made free to all users irrespective of their network.[7]

In November 2022, JioCinema became the official broadcaster of 2022 FIFA World Cup in India.[8] The app received criticism at the start of the tournament due to lags and glitches on the live streams.[9]

In 2022, Jio acquired the digital rights to the Indian Premier League as part of a multi-year deal through 2027, beginning in the 2023 edition.[10][11][12] In January 2023, it also acquired the digital rights to the new Women's Premier League.[13]

Content

JioCinema has aggregated content from partners like ALTBalaji, Paramount Pictures, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, Viacom18, Shemaroo Entertainment, Balaji Motion Pictures, Sun NXT, SonyLIV, and others.

In December 2018, JioCinema partnered with Disney India[14][15][16] to offer Disney content in the JioCinema app. Disney has withdrawn from this deal after the introduction of Disney+ Hotstar in India. In December 2019, with Sun TV Network to host over 4,000 films. available on the Sun NXT platform[17][18][19][20] across 4 South Indian languages: Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.

In May 2020, JioCinema partnered with Hoichoi to provide Hindi-dubbed Bengali content.[21]

In April 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery announced an agreement with JioCinema for it to carry HBO and HBO Max original programming, as well as other Warner Bros. Television Studios content. The deal succeeds a previous agreement with both Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video respectively.[22][23]

In August 2019, Xiaomi,[24][25] TCL[26][27] and in November 2019, Intex announced[28] JioCinema app integration for their smart TVs.

Viewership

As per Statista's Q2 2020 report, JioCinema has 7% market share among many competitors like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video that have a 20% market share each, Disney+ Hotstar having a 17% market share, ZEE5 with 9% market share, ALTBalaji and SonyLIV with 4% market share each, and other streaming platforms having a 19% market share.[33]

In the opening week of 16th IPL, JioCinema had viewership of over 147 Crore views (1.47 Billion) breaking the record of any digital platform and it is higher than whole viewership of 15th IPL (Complete season) on Disney+ Hotstar.[34]

As per the JioCinema's tweet, it had recorded 24 Million + views in a single point in the RCB vs CSK match on 17th April, 2023 making it the most streamed OTT platform of all time.[35]
