Synopsis
In 1858, in the Jewish quarter of Bologna, the Pope's soldiers burst into the home of the Mortara family. On the order of the Cardinal, they have been sent to seize Edgardo, the family's six-year-old son. According to the testimony of a former servant, the boy was secretly baptized when he fell ill as an infant. The Papal law is final: he must receive a Catholic education. His parents fight to see him again, supported by an increasingly intolerant public opinion towards the temporal power of the Church. But the Pope does not agree to return the child. As Edgardo grows up in the Catholic faith, the temporal power of the Church is waning and the unification of Italy begins.[2]
