Litchfield High currently enrolls students from Bantam, Northfield, East Litchfield, and Litchfield. The school gym, designed by Marcel Breuer, is currently featured on the Smithsonian's website for its unique architecture.[6]

On June 29, 2022, Warren, Morris, Goshen and Litchfield voted to merge their school systems, creating a new Region 20.[7] The Litchfield High School building will serve as the Middle School (Grades 6-8) for the new region, when it begins in 2025.[8] It is the only high school in the town of Litchfield and serves students in grades 9th-12th. Established in 1901, Litchfield High School has a long and proud history of providing quality education to the students of Litchfield.

Academics

At Litchfield High School, students have access to a comprehensive curriculum that includes Advanced Placement courses in literature, calculus, biology, U.S. history, and statistics. The school offers a range of electives including art, music, agriculture, and foreign language.

Litchfield High School is known for its strong academic programs and consistently high test scores. According to the state Department of Education, in the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT), Litchfield High School students have scored above state averages in nearly all subjects. In 2019, Litchfield High School was ranked in the top 20% of high schools in Connecticut by Niche, which rates schools based on academic and student life data.

Athletics

Litchfield High School offers a variety of competitive sports programs for its students. These include soccer, cross country, golf, basketball, track and field, baseball, softball, and tennis. The school is a member of the Berkshire League, and its athletic teams compete against other local high schools in the region.

Notable alumni

Litchfield High School has produced many notable alumni, including:

  • John Harney: a journalist and author who has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Sports Illustrated.
  • Josephine Roche: a social activist, suffragist, and politician. She was the first woman to run for governor of Colorado in 1934.
  • Stella Steiger French: an educator and civic leader who served as State Commissioner of Education in Connecticut from 1959 to 1971.
  • Nathaniel Buzolic: an Australian actor best known for his roles on the television series The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Legends of Tomorrow.
