"Padam Padam" is a song by Australian singer Kylie Minogue, released on 18 May 2023 as the lead single from her upcoming sixteenth studio album Tension.[4] It was written by Ina Wroldsen and Peter Rycroft, and produced by Lostboy.[5] The music video was directed by Sophie Muller and released the same day as the song.[6]

Background

The song was announced alongside the album announcement on 12 May 2023, but had no release date at the time.[7] The release date was announced on 16 May, along with a 20-second preview of the song.[4] The song's title is onomatopoeia for a heartbeat.[5]

Composition

"Padam Padam" has been described as a "hypnotic electro",[3] "sleek, thumping, catchy-as-hell dance-pop jam",[1] as well as the "euphoric opening" song on Tension.[7] It contains an "unmistakable" electric guitar riff[4] and a "techno-pop backdrop".[5] It also "sees [Minogue] move away from Disco and into a darker, more European-inspired synth-pop turn".[2]

Critical Reception

Upon release, 'Padam Padam' received widespread acclaim from music critics. Writing for Stereogum, Tom Breihan described 'Padam Padam' as "a sleek, thumping, catchy-as-hell dance-pop jam", adding that "Kylie knows exactly how to deliver a song like that".[8] Describing the song as "infectious", Erik Malvin from Retropop called 'Padam Padam' "a punchy electronic extravaganza that promises to be ‘in your head all weekend’", citing a lyric from the song.[9] Hollie Geraghty from NME called out its "thumping earworm refrain".[10] Similarly, writing for Stereoboard.com, Jon Stickler said "the catchy pop banger" has a "an infectious chorus".[11] In her review for The Music, Mary Varvaris called out the song's "fresh and vibrant dance sound". She wrote that the song "sounds completely 2023 while still remaining unmistakably Kylie".[12]

Music video

The music video was filmed in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles and directed by Sophie Muller.[13] It was released on 18 May 2023,[6] and shows Minogue in a red custom Mugler catsuit with a cape[14] flanked by dancers who are also all dressed in red.[5]
