SSMB28

SSMB28 is the working title for an upcoming Indian Telugu-language action drama film written and directed by Trivikram Srinivas, and produced by S. Radha Krishna under his banner Haarika & Hassine Creations. The film stars Mahesh Babu, Pooja Hegde, Sreeleela, John Abraham, Jagapathi Babu and Jayaram. The film marks Telugu debut of Bollywood actor John Abraham.

The film was officially announced in May 2021 under the tentative title SSMB28, as it is Babu's 28th film as a lead actor. Principal photography commenced on 12 September 2022 in Annapurna Studios, Hyderabad. The music is scored by Thaman S, with cinematography handled by P. S. Vinod and editing handled by Naveen Nooli. The film is scheduled to be released in theatres worldwide on 13 January 2024 coinciding Sankranti.

Development

In November 2014, in an interview between Mahesh Babu and Trivikram it was revealed that Babu and Trivikram were going to be coming together for a third film after Athadu (2005) and Khaleja (2010) that would commence in 2015.[9] After being delayed for 7 years, in May 2021, the project was officially announced.[10][11] It was further reported that S. Radha Krishna will produce the film under his own banner Haarika & Haasine Creations. The film was formally launched in February 2022, under the tentative title SSMB28 as it is intended to be Babu's 28th film as a lead actor.[12][13]

Pre-production

In January 2022, Trivikram narrated complete story to Babu in Germany.[14] Producer Naga Vamsi said the film would be "family entertainer".[15] A muhurat puja was held on 3 February 2022 at Ramanaidu Studios in Hyderabad with the film's cast and crew.[16] The technical team of the film consists of cinematographer R. Madhi editor Naveen Nooli and production designer A. S. Prakash.[17][18] Followed by the success of Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava (2018) and Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020), Thaman S was brought on for the third time, as the film's music composer.[19] Madhi was eventually replaced by P. S. Vinod as the cinematographer, as he opted out due to schedule conflicts.[20] Action choreographers Anbariv were also brought on board to compose the action sequences in the film.[21] However, they were replaced with Ram Lakshman duo starting with the second schedule of the filming in January 2023.[22] PDV Prasad was appointed as executive producer of the film by the production house.[23] Smt. Mamatha was film's presenter and Lakshmi Venugopal served as film's PRO.[24]

Casting

In August 2021, Pooja Hegde was reported to be the lead actress, marking her second collaboration with Babu, after Maharshi (2019) and third collaboration with Trivikram, after Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava and Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo.[25][26] In January 2023, it was confirmed that Sreeleela was also a part of the cast,[2] to play Babu's uncle's daughter in the film.[27] In February, Ramya Krishna joined the cast.[6] In March, Prakash Raj and Jayaram joined the cast.[7][28] In April, Jagapathi Babu was confirmed as cast. Jagapathi Babu was reported to play "a very endearing yet scary" character.[29] In May, John Abraham was reported to play the antagonist role, which marked his maiden Telugu film.[3] Mahesh Achanta was also confirmed as cast.[8]

Filming

Principal photography commenced on 12 September 2022 with an action sequence in Annapurna Studios, Hyderabad.[30] The first schedule, involving high-octane stunts choreographed by Anbariv duo,[22] was later completed in the same month.[31] However it was later confirmed by the producers that the fight was scrapped.[32] The second schedule was planned to commence after Dussehra festivities in Ramoji Film City with Hegde joining the sets.[33][30] In October, reports surfaced claiming the film was shelved citing Babu being disappointed with the script and its outcome.[34][22] The shooting was then halted with Trivikiram making modifications to the script and converted the action thriller film into a "family entertainer".[22]

At the end of October, the filmmakers stated that the second schedule of the shooting would soon begin.[34] Confirmed in early December,[35] the filming of the second schedule started on 18 January 2023 in Sarathi Studios, Hyderabad.[36] In February, team constructed a house set spending ₹10 crore at Shankarpalli, Telengana in Hyderabad.[37][38] Hegde joined the sets with filming taking place in Hyderabad.[39] In March, Jayaram joined the sets.[40]

Thaman S is signed to compose the soundtrack album and background score for the film,[41] in his fifth collaboration with Babu, and third collaboration with Trivikram.[19] Thaman started the work on the film's music in June 2022.[42]

Release

Theatrical

SSMB28 was initially planned for a theatrical release on 28 April 2023.[43] Later it was announced that the film will release theatrically on 13 January 2024 coinciding Sankranti.[44]

Pre-release business

According to Indian trade sources, the film is set to achieve a pre-release recovery of ₹300 crore (US$38 million) with the sale of satellite, digital, music, and theatrical rights, out of which, ₹150 crore (US$19 million) has been earned from the film's non-theatrical rights.[45] The South Indian digital rights of the film were sold for ₹82 crore (US$10 million).[46] The theatrical Nizam rights were sold to Dil Raju for ₹50 crore (US$6.3 million).[47]

Home Media

The digital distribution rights were acquired by Netflix.[48] The film will stream after 50 days of it's theatrical run in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi languages.[49][50]
