Shaw Mobile launched as an MVNO division of Freedom Mobile, which had been owned by Shaw Communications since 2016.[1] However, Shaw Mobile was positioned as being a comparable service to the flagship brands of the "big three" national mobile providers (Bell, Rogers and Telus) with offerings that could be bundled with Shaw’s home internet services, whereas Freedom's main competitors are flanker brands such as Virgin, Fido, and Koodo.[2]

Under the acquisition of Shaw Communications by Rogers Communications and resale of Freedom Mobile to Quebecor, the latter acquired all of Freedom's "branded wireless and Internet customers", but the Shaw Mobile division and its customers were retained by Rogers.[3][4] According to the Rogers and Shaw websites, Shaw Mobile became unavailable for new customers on April 4, 2023, the day after the merger was completed; existing Shaw Mobile customers will be transitioned to comparable Rogers-branded plans in the months following the merger completion.[5][6]
