The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong

The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong, is a five-star hotel of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company by the American brand, Marriott International. It is the 3rd highest hotel in the world and highest in Hong Kong. [1]

From 2011 to 2019, it was the world's highest hotel, currently surpassed by Rosewood Guangzhou located on the top floors of the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre, and Heavenly Jin of J Hotel Shanghai Tower on the 120th floor at 556 m! [2]

History

It was located in Central, Hong Kong from 1993 to 2008 and reopened at International Commerce Centre on March 29, 2011. Its interior lighting was designed by British lighting designer Sally Storey.[3]

Features

It takes 80 seconds to the reception lobby and Café 103 on level 103 at 425 m from level 9. The another coffee zone is called "Café 100", located on the west side of Sky100 on level 100.

Guest keycards are required to use the hotel elevators to access the hotel rooms on level 106 to 117.

On level 117, the presidential suite covers an area of 366 m2 (3,940 sq ft), with a 270-degree, floor-to-ceiling city view of Hong Kong Island, Victoria Harbor and Kowloon Peninsula. It is the highest suite in the world, around 469 m or 101-story high! [4]

An exclusive club lounge for guests staying in club rooms and suites along with the spa on level 116; the world’s highest swimming pool, fitness centre and outdoor rooftop bar (Ozone) set on the top floor 118 at 476 m.

The Michelin-dining can be experienced on level 102. A one-starred Italian cuisine, Tosca di Angelo, is presided by chef, Angelo Aglianó, who was born in Sicily and brings the inspiration from where he works over the years to his arts; a Chinese cuisine, Tin Lung Heen,[5] has been given two-starred since 2013 and led by the Culinary Director, Paul Lau Ping-lui, who makes the culinary arts in Chinese style to be famous in Hong Kong.

Suicide & homicide

A woman jumped to death from level R4

At about 3am on August 9, 2017, a 29-year-old guest, Liao Yilin, was found lying on the platform outside of level 8. She was a daughter of Liao Rong-jiu, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Political Consultative Conference. She was suspected of climbed over the fence from the fire barrier on level "R4" and jumped, which is the 89th floor at 404 m above sea level. The protruding windows on level 10 were shattered after she fell. [6][7]

A South Korean CEO murdered wife and son

On January 14, 2018, a 42-year-old South Korean, who was a CEO of a chocolate company, murdered his 42-year-old wife and 7-year-old son at room 31 on level 109 because of business failure and told his friend who was in South Korea that he was going to suicide. The South Korean police and the Consulate General in Hong Kong intervened.

The man was arrested at the crime scene and remanded in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre. On April 16, he hanged himself with a bed sheet. [8][9]

The murder of Aqua Chow

Aqua Chow (周慧賢), a 23-year-old yoga instructor in Hong Kong, planned to go to the United States for studying at 2am on June 30, 2022. She disappeared after leaving her apartment in the afternoon of June 29 with her 28-year-old ex-boyfriend, Alex Lo. He surrendered next day and the deceased with more than 30 knife stabs was found in a bathtub at room 05 on level 106. [10][11]
