History
On May 10, 1875 the schooner Tonga which was carrying wares for Durban was wrecked here. The sailors not wanting the cargo to go to waste set up a store on the river bank and sold the water damaged goods. The store was known by the Afrikaans as winkel (shop).
Geography
Lying on the Sapphire Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, Winklespruit lies approximately 35 km south-west of the city of Durban and 11 km south-west of the coastal town of Amanzimtoti. The coastal village is situated north of the mouth of the Lovu River on a hilly terrain, which is a typical topographical characteristic of this stretch of coastline and is bounded by Warner Beach to the north, St Winifreds and Astra Park to the north-west and Illovo Beach to the south.
Retail
Winklespruit serves as Kingsburgh's main retail node, as it includes the town's only shopping centres including DSM Mall with Superspar as its anchor tenant and Kingsburgh Centre, the larger of the two and has PicknPay as its anchor tenant.[2] [3]Both shopping centres are located along the main road, the R102 (Andrew Zondo Road; Winklespruit Road).
Transport
The R102 named ‘Andrew Zondo Road’ (previously and popularly known as ‘Kingsway’) passes through Winklespruit as the thoroughfare of the coastal village. The road links Winklespruit to Warner Beach, Doonside and Amanzimtoti in the north-east and Illovo Beach, Umgababa and Umkomaas in the south-west.
The N2 highway passes Winklespruit to the west, running from Port Shepstone in the south-west to Amanzimtoti and Durban in the north-east with the R603 interchange (Exit 133) offering access to the coastal village from the N2.
The R603 named ‘Umbumbulu Road’ is a regional route beginning at the intersection with the R102 in Winklespruit and runs towards the rural hinterland connecting to Umbumbulu, Umlaas Road and Pietermaritzburg (via the N3 highway in Umlaas Road) in the north-west.
