Though T-ara is officially credited on all tracks of the single, only Ji-yeon participated in singing and performing.[4] A second special project single was released a year later following the success of the first featuring SeeYa, Davichi, and T-ara (Hyomin & Eun-jung).[5]

Background and release

On April 21, CCM announced that Davichi and Seeya will be releasing a special project single. Controversy rose, due to Seeya's member Nam Gyu-ri's legal dispute with the agency following her sudden departure from the group. Jiyeon, a member of newcomer T-ara joined the project representing her group. Jiyeon was speculated as Seeya's new member after her participation, however, CCM denied the rumors and announced that she will remain a member of T-ara.[6]

"Women's Generation" was later re-released under Seeya's album Rebloom on October 26, 2009, as a CD-only track.

Composition

The single is composed of 3 tracks all written by K.Smith and produced/composed by Cho Young-soo. A title track "Women's Generation", an alternate version of the song called "Forever Love" and a remix for the latter. "Forever Love" had the same melody as "Women's Generation", but the lyrics and part distribution were slightly different.

Promotion and live performances

"Women's Generation" was performed for the first time on On May 7 on Mnet's M!Countdown and then on several weekly music show programs including SBS's Inkigayo and KBS's Music Bank until June. The unit also occasionally performed the rest of the tracks.[7]

Legacy and impact

The single's message led to it receiving national acclaim and becoming a cult classic, a symbol of women's empowerment. This also resulted in it being used in several TV shows and films.[3]

At their first concert, WSG Wannabe performed "Women's Generation" (along with Wonder Woman") which was broadcast by MBC. The performance went viral resulting in both songs re-entering the charts and the performance video reaching over 3 Million views on YouTube.[8] According to Nielsen Korea (reported by MBC News), the highest rated part of the concert was the cover songs performance which achieved 7.0% rating.[9]

Due to its lyrics about women's empowerment, "Women's Generation" is often used in dramas and films. In 2009, it was repeatedly played on MBC's Cinderella Man. The same year it was used in the mobile game "Music Factory".

In 2013, the song was performed by Cho Hang-jo on KBS2's drama "Wang's Family".

In October 2022, the song was selected as both the opening and closing theme for film Ajumma, according to the film's director Huh Shu-ming, the song describes well the protagonist's situation as a passionate mother "I made it while thinking about what kind of life my mother would have lived if she hadn't devoted herself to me".[10]

Charts

The single was a commercial success peaking within the top 3 on all Korean music charts including at first on Bugs and three at MelOn. "Forever Love" and its remix also made it to the charts with the original peaking within the Top 10. It topped the Korean mobile charts for four consecutive weeks.[11] The song also peaked at two on KBS's Music Bank and other programs, however, it never won a trophy due to it being only a digital single with physical single score.[3]

"Women's Generation" ended up peaking at three on MelOn's monthly chart and 31 on the yearly chart. It also ended ranking at #4 in mobile downloads for 2009 [12][13]
