History
Belle Plaine was created in 1871.[7] Belle Plaine is a French name, and it means "beautiful plain".[8] In 1883, Belle Plaine was a station and shipping point for the Southern Central & Fort Scott Railway.[9] By 1910, it was at the junction of two railroads, the Missouri Pacific and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe.[10] The first post office in Belle Plaine was created in April 1871.[11]

Belle Plaine is at 37°23′39″N 97°16′45″W (37.394214, -97.279076).[12] The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 0.91 square miles (2.36 km2). All of it is land.[1]
Weather
Belle Plaine has hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The Köppen Climate Classification system says that Belle Plaine has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[13]
