The song was written by guitarist Ben Moody except for the bridge. It is a piano and power ballad.[1][2] The lyrics of the song are about a spirit that haunts the memory of a grieving loved one.[3] It is based on a short story that Moody had written before.

On the Billboard charts, "My Immortal" was able to peak at #7 on Hot 100,[4] #2 on the Mainstream Top 40,[5] #1 on the Adult Top 40,[6] and #19 on the Adult Contemporary charts.[7] In 2005, the song was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.[8] The Harry Potter fan fiction My Immortal (fan fiction) is named after the song.
