His political career began when he was seen as a possible candidate for the United States Senate in the 2022 election, but decided not to run.[4] After the 2022 midterm elections, he had been named as a potential presidential candidate.[5] By early February, it was reported that Ramaswamy was preparing a presidential campaign.[6] He officially announced his campaign on February 21, 2023.[7]

His campaign admitted in May 2023 that he had paid an editor to edit his English Wikipedia page before announcing his candidacy, but denied that it was politically motivated.[8]
