Considered to be a hybrid between Chenopodium cristatum and Chenopodium melanocarpum. (Wilson, P.G. in George, A.S. (ed.) (1984), Chenopodiaceae. Flora of Australia 4: 153, without Australian distribution.)
Both hybrid parents are now in genus Dysphania.
