Inherited from Old Polish macierz (“mother”). Doublet of mać (“mother”), maciora (“female pig”), and mutra (“nut for a bolt”). mać comes from leveling to the nominative stem, macierz and maciora from leveling to the two oblique stems, and mutra was borrowed from German.
