These delightful breakfast treats look like breadsticks, but have the same great flavor as traditional cinnamon rolls. They are so sweet and flavorful; they can be served as a dessert, too.
Ingredients
Servings: 12
Prep time: 30 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes
- 1 tbsp. yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 3 tbsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 cups flour
- 1 stick butter
- 3/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp. salt
- 2 tbsp. butter, melted
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp. milk
- 2 tbsp. cream cheese, softened at room temperature
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Steps
Make the Cinnamon Roll Dough
Prepare the dough first so that it can rest while you make the topping.
-
1Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) while you prepare the dough and the topping.
-
2Dissolve the yeast, sugar and water in a medium bowl.Advertisement
-
3Allow the mixture to rest for 5 minutes until it gets bubbly.
-
4Add the salt and 3 1/4 cups of the flour to the yeast mixture.
-
5Stir the ingredients by hand until they’re well mixed, or use the dough hook on your mixer to blend the ingredients.
-
6Add more flour, a few tablespoons at a time, if the dough is sticky. The dough is ready when it pulls away from the mixing bowl or has formed a ball around the dough hook.
-
7Generously flour your cutting board or counter top where you will be rolling out the dough.
-
8Place the ball of dough on the floured surface and allow it to rest for 10 minutes. You can place a clean kitchen towel over the ball of dough or let it rest uncovered.
Prepare the Cinnamon Topping
You can make the cinnamon topping while your dough is resting.
-
1Place 8 tablespoons or 1/2 cup of butter on your microwavable-safe bowl..
-
2Place it in the microwave and set for 1 to 2 minutes, until the butter is melted. Time may vary.
-
3Mix 2 tablespoons of the melted butter from the pan with the sugars, cinnamon and salt in a small mixing bowl.Set the cinnamon mixture aside when it has reached a creamy consistency.
Form the Dough into Breadsticks
Now you are ready to take the ball of dough that has been resting and make it into breadsticks.
-
1Lightly knead the dough for a few minutes.
-
2Roll out the dough using a rolling pin until you reach your desired thickness.
-
3Use a pizza cutter or a knife to cut 1 1/2" wide strips of the dough. You should be able to make 12 breadsticks.
-
4Place a wax paper into the baking sheet.
-
5Arrange the breadsticks into the baking sheet. If you were able to get more than 12 from your dough, you can bake them in another pan.
-
6Dip the brush into the butter and gently spread it in each breadsticks Coat each side.
-
7Pour the cinnamon mixture over the breadsticks.
-
8Allow the breadstick dough to rise for about 20 minutes at room temperature.
-
9Bake the cinnamon breadsticks for 15 to 20 minutes.
-
10Remove them from the oven and allow them to cool for 10 minutes.
Prepare the Glaze
While the breadsticks are baking, you can get the glaze ready.
-
1Stir together the sugar, milk and cream cheese in a medium bowl using a spatula.
-
2Add the vanilla.
-
3Continue to mix the ingredients until your glaze is smooth and thin enough to drizzle. You can add small amounts of milk to thin it, if necessary.
-
4Drizzle the glaze over the slightly cooled cinnamon breadsticks. You can dip a wire whisk into the glaze and drizzle it all over the breadsticks, or you can create a crisscross pattern.
-
5Serve them warm.
-
6Finished.
