Bánh dày

Bánh dày (also written as bánh dầy, meaning pounded cake in Vietnamese) is a traditional Vietnamese glutinous rice cake.

Details

It is made from grounded sticky rice that is mixed with other ingredients and then pounded until it is smooth and sticky.[1] Then bánh dày is shaped into a round or oval shape and steamed or boiled. It is often served with muối tiêu (pepper and salt), chả lụa (Vietnamese sausage), thịt kho (braised pork), or other savory fillings depends on the region.[2]

Bánh dày is thought to be created during the time of Hùng Kings[3] and since then became a popular dish in Vietnam and is often served during special occasions such as Tết (Lunar New Year), Giỗ Tổ Hùng Vương ( Hùng King's Commemoration Day) or đám cưới (weddings). In Vietnamese folk religion, white bánh dày symbolizes heaven/sky and green bánh chưng symbolizes earth and they are often served together as offerings to ancestors.[1][3] It is also a popular snack food and can be found at many street food vendors.[2]
