Mahanathi

Mahanadhi-Sakotharigalin Kadhai (transl. The Great River-A story of sisters) is an 2023 Indian Tamil-language drama television series starring Kamuruddin, Prathiba, Lakshmi Priya, Rudran Praveen, Saravanan and Sujatha Sivakumar.[1][2] It is produced by Praveen Bennett under the banner of Global Villagers. It premiered on Star Vijay from 23 January 2023 from Monday to Friday at 21:30 and is also available on the digital platform Disney+ Hotstar.[3] This series was launched along with Siragadikka Aasai.[4]

Plot

The series depicts the story of four sisters around a family, who lost their father and tries to rise up in society.[5]

Ganga, Kaveri, Yamuna and Narmadha are four sisters who are very fond of each other. Their father Santhanam has returned home after earning money by working abroad. They have a wellwisher who runs their family while Sandhanam is away.

Kaveri is a brave girl; Nivin falls for her after seeing her at a festival. Ganga, her elder sister, is being loved by her cousin, Kumaran. Ganga is hesitant to express her feelings when Kumaran's family comes to ask for an alliance. She tells her father that she doesn't want to marry him, so Santhanam finds another groom for her.

Her marriage is fixed and Santhanam wishes to marry her off grandly. However, no one in the family knows where he is keeping the money for the marriage. Before the engagement day, he goes and asks for money from his friend, Pasupathy, who says that all the amount he sent home was all in vain. Santhanam, heartbroken, has no way to pay for his daughter's marriage. On Ganga’s engagement day, he is found dead in his bed. The daughters do his final rites, which then leads the story to focus on how the 4 girls along with their mother, cope with life without a father figure.

Production

Development

The shooting of the serial commenced in December 2022. The first promo was released on 7 January 2023.[6] The series promotion was in Bigg Boss 6 house on 16 January.[7]

Casting

Lakshmi Priya[8] and Prathiba were cast in the female lead roles as Kaveri and Ganga. Kamuruddin and Newcomer Rudran Praveen[8] portrayed male lead roles as Kumaran and Nivin, whilst Saravanan and Sujatha Sivakumar[9] were also selected for supporting roles.

Airing history

The show started airing on Star Vijay on 23 January 2023 and it aired on Monday to Friday 22:00 (IST). From Monday 17 April 2023, the show was shifted to 21:30 (IST).[10]
