Marianne Williamson 2024 presidential campaign
Marianne Williamson, an author, spiritual activist, and candidate for the Democratic Party presidential nomination in 2020, announced her campaign for the 2024 United States presidential election on March 4, 2023.[2] Williamson was the first Democratic major candidate to officially announce their candidacy,[3][4] as president Joe Biden didn't announce his re-election bid until April 2023.[5] Several journalists have deemed her campaign a "longshot".[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] She has been frequently excluded from polls, even after her announcement, and her last campaign typically polled near 1%, although she is already far surpassing her previous peak.[14]

Background
Williamson previously ran a campaign for the 2020 Democratic Party presidential nomination, and ran as an independent to represent California's 33rd congressional district in 2014.[15][16] She formally ended her campaign on January 10, 2020.[17]
Announcement

On February 18, 2023, Williamson confirmed she would make "an important announcement" in Washington, D.C. on March 4 regarding the 2024 presidential election.[18] In an interview with Politico published the day before she teased the announcement, she said if she were to run, she would remain with the Democratic Party, in an apparent move to set up a primary challenge against incumbent President Joe Biden; she stated a factor into her decision would be to address what she described as Biden's "message that the economy is getting stronger".[19]
Williamson formally announced her candidacy in a twenty-minute speech she delivered at Union Station.[20]
Political positions
Williamson told ABC News her policies included free healthcare, free college and free childcare.[21] She advocates for new ideas such as a Department of Peace,[22] which would promote peace and diplomacy, as well as a Department of Children and Youth, which Williamson says are severely neglected (children) and calls the current treatment of children by the government "collective neglection".[22] She believes the United States needs mass-mobilization in order to prevent a climate catastrophe, and criticizes President Biden for not doing enough to combat climate change.[22] She also supports certain proposed constitutional amendments, such as the Equal Rights Amendment and a proposed amendment to enshrine rights for individuals who identify as LGBTQ+.[23] She is often described as a progressive Democrat, and her policies are similiar to those of former 2020 rival Bernie Sanders,[24] who she endorsed after her exit from the race and has been praised by.[25][26] Williamson used to have universal-basic-income on her platform, however as of recently it has not been present.[27][28]
Criticisms
Marianne Williamson has been called a spoiler candidate, along with candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. who is also running for the nomination,[29] however Marianne has called this opinion deeply flawed as "This is a primary. You cannot be a 'spoiler candidate in a primary". Despite this, many media outlets still call Williamson a spoiler, and according to Williamson this is to "intimidate people into voting for Biden."
