Background
Following several snap elections, the Bulgarian National Assembly has failed to put together a government since the fall of the Petkov Government in Summer 2022, and it has been in a fragmented state since 'anti-corruption' parties made a breakthrough in the April 2021 election.[1][2]
The 2023 election saw little change from the 2022 one, with Boyko Borisov's centre-right GERB—SDS narrowly winning over the centrist PP–DB alliance. The far right Revival (VAZ) and the populist There is Such a People (ITN) made gains, with the latter re-entering the Assembly after it fell out in the 2022 election.[3][4] The parliament remained fragmented with no obvious route to form a government. The two main suggested options are a technocratic government supported by both GERB and PP–DB, and a 'Magnitsky coalition' between GERB, the Socialist Party (BSP) and the Turkish minority rights Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS).[5][6][7]
