Burdett is a city in Pawnee County, Kansas, United States. In 2010, 247 people lived there.[6]

History

Burdett was a station and shipping point on the division of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The railroad went from Larned to Jetmore.[7] The community was named for the American humorist writer Robert Jones Burdette.[8]

A post office was opened in Brown's Grove (an extinct town) in 1877. It was moved to Burdett in 1887.[9]

Geography

Burdett is at 38°11′36″N 99°31′35″W (38.193410, -99.526456).[10] The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 0.27 square miles (0.70 km2). All of it is land.[1]

Climate

Burdett has hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The Köppen Climate Classification system says that Burdett has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[11]

The 2010 census says that there were 247 people, 102 households, and 68 families living in Burdett.[2]

Education

Burdett is part of USD 496 Pawnee Heights. The Pawnee Heights High School mascot is Tigers.[12]

Famous people
  • Clyde Tombaugh, astronomer who discovered the dwarf planet Pluto in 1930, he lived in Burdett during part of his teens.
