The town started in 1893 because gold was found in Birch Creek.[1] Circle was named by miners who believed the town was on the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle is actually about 50 mi (80 km) north.

Each February, the town has a checkpoint for the long-distance Yukon Quest sled dog race.
