The Baixada Fluminense region is the immediate periphery of Rio de Janeiro. Its urban area sprawled along the suburban train lines and the main highways of the capital and its continuous surrounding areas. This expansion occurred more intensely along axes towards Itaguaí, in the west, Paracambi, in the northwest, and Duque de Caxias, in the north (following later towards Guapimirim, in the northeast). The region is located in the wide lowlands area to the north of the central municipality and to the south of the mountain range known as Serra do Mar, and includes the municipalities of Guapimirim, Magé, Duque de Caxias, São João de Meriti, Belford Roxo, Nilópolis, Mesquita, Nova Iguaçu, Queimados, Japeri, Paracambi, Seropédica and Itaguaí.

The major airports in the Rio de Janeiro state are Galeão - Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG IATA).  and Santos Dumont Airport (SDU IATA). , and the main long-distance bus station is Rodoviária Novo Rio. , so it is very likely that someone arrives in Rio's metro area through the capital city. In this case, there are lots of urban lines of several means of public transport that links directly the metropolitan core to each one of the 13 municipalities of Baixada Fluminense.
