Nilópolis is a city of Baixada Fluminense, in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, state of Rio de Janeiro.

Nilópolis is the municipality with the smallest area in the Grande Rio region. However, it has a high demographic density, with its urban area conurbated with those of all its surrounding municipalities (Rio de Janeiro, São João de Meriti, and Mesquita). It is one of the main passages for those traveling between Nova Iguaçu, the second largest city in Baixada Fluminense, and the capital.
Nilópolis is also crossed by the Japeri railway line, which links the Central do Brasil station, in the Rio de Janero city center, to the municipality of Japeri. Moreover, the Japeri line has two train stations inside the territory of Nilópolis: Olinda station, and Nilópolis station (the latter in downtown).

From the Central Zone of the capital, one can use urban bus, van and train lines to go to Nilópolis.
