Route description

The expressway starts at the end of NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10. It slightly curves to the right, passing through streets such as Hermosa Street and Solis Street. It then curves to the left as it runs parallel to Antipolo Street. It then rises up as it passes above the Blumentritt station. It then curves to the right passing through Dimasalang Street and more streets including Maria Clara Street, Simoun Street and others, as well as the Espana Boulevard, where the 1st section ends. Past the boulevard, it passes through more streets including S.H. Loyola Street, Fajardo Street, and General Tuazon Street. It then curves as it approaches Magsaysay Boulevard, then curves again to the right approaching Paco–Santa Mesa Road. It terminates at the Metro Manila Skyway.

History

There were several plans to make a highway connecting North Luzon Expressway and South Luzon Expressway before construction of the highway.

The government approved an unsolicited proposal from Metro Pacific Tollways Development Corporation (MPTDC) to build the highway in 2013.[3] It was soon known as the NLEX Connector Road. The highway will run parallel to the PNR tracks from Segment 10 to the Metro Manila Skyway.[4] It is estimated to cost 17 billion, but as an "all-elevated" or completely grade-separated structure, right-of-way acquisition shall be reduced to an estimated cost of only ₱2.41 billion. Its construction takes into consideration the upcoming parallel construction of the southern segment of the North–South Commuter Railway.

The 8-kilometer (5.0 mi)[5] elevated expressway is divided into two sections: Section 1, spanning 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) from Caloocan to España, and Section 2, spanning 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) from España to Santa Mesa. Once completed, it will have four entry and exit points: Caloocan Interchange, C-3 Road in Caloocan, España in Sampaloc, Manila, and Magsaysay Boulevard near Santa Mesa, Manila.

Construction on the NLEX Connector began on February 28, 2019.[6] DMCI undertook the civil works for Section 1,[4] while China Road and Bridge Corporation handled the construction of Section 2.[7] To make way for the planned section which would traverse below LRT Line 2, the Magsaysay Flyover along Magsaysay Boulevard is currently undergoing decommissioning.[8]
