The 2024 Michigan Republican presidential primary is set to be held on February 27, 2024, as part of the Republican Party primaries for the 2024 presidential election. 55 delegates to the 2024 Republican National Convention will be allocated on a winner-take-most basis.[1] The contest will take place concurrently with its Democratic counterpart.

Background

In the 2016 Michigan Republican presidential primary, Donald Trump won with 36.5% of the vote, carrying 25 out of 59 delegates total. His closest opponents, Governor of Ohio John Kasich and Senator from Texas Ted Cruz, received 24.9% and 24.3% of the vote, respectively, with both candidates receiving 17 delegates.[2]

Schedule

In February 2023, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation to move up the date of both the Democratic and Republican presidential primaries in Michigan to February 27, 2024, in line with the Democratic National Committee's (DNC) state reorganization plan.[3] As of May 2023, the date violates Republican Party Rule 16, which prohibits any state except Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina, from holding their primary/caucus until on or after March 1st, 2024, meaning the state would lose nearly 80% of their delegates.

Candidates

Declared candidates

Former President Donald Trump, former Governor of South Carolina and Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, former Governor of Arkansas Asa Hutchinson, Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, and radio host Larry Elder are the only main contenders to officially announce their candidacy so far.[4][5][6][7][8]

Potential candidates

Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis is widely expected to announce his candidacy as soon as May 2023.[9] Commentators have described DeSantis as Trump's closest rival in the Republican primary based on primary polling taken in 2022 and 2023.[10][11] Former Vice President Mike Pence is also considering a candidacy for the Republican nomination.[12]

Other Republicans reportedly considering a candidacy include Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina;[13] Governor Chris Sununu of New Hampshire;[14] former Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey;[15] former National Security Advisor John Bolton of Maryland;[16] former Representative Mike Rogers of Michigan;[17] former Representative Will Hurd of Texas;[18] and Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez of Florida.[19]

Other candidates

Detroit-based businessman Perry Johnson, who unsuccessfully ran in the Republican primary for Governor of Michigan in the 2022 election, has launched a presidential candidacy.[20] Described as a "long-shot" candidate, Johnson spent $192,000 on a campaign ad at Super Bowl LVII.[21]
