Margaret Rutherford nació en Balham, Londres, Reino Unido, el 11 de mayo de 1892. Rutherford nació en el suburbio londinense de Balham, siendo la hija única de William Rutherford Benn y su esposa. Su padre padeció de problemas mentales durante varios años y el 4 de marzo de 1883 golpeó a su propio padre hasta matarlo. Siendo una niña, Rutherford fue llevada a la India, pero al morir su madre regresó a Gran Bretaña con tres años de edad para vivir con su tía Bessie Nicholson. Fue educada en la Wimbledon High School y en la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Inicialmente, Rutherford trabajó como maestra de elocución y no fue hasta más adelante en su vida cuando empezó carrera como actriz al hacer su debut teatral en el Old Vic en 1925 a la edad de 33 años.

Vida artística

La crítica elogió su interpretación en El constructor Solness (1934) de Henrik Ibsen. Otros papeles que ayudaron a su prestigio fueron Miss Bijou Furse en Spring meeting (Encuentro en primavera, 1938) y Madame Arcati, la médium ciclista de Blithe spirit (Espíritu alegre, 1941) de Noel Coward. Consiguió una popularidad internacional como miss Marple en la serie de películas basadas en los relatos policíacos de Agatha Christie en los años sesenta, y consiguió un Oscar en 1964 por su trabajo en Hotel internacional (1963), de Anthony Asquith.
